Your online 12-week therapeutic education and exercise programme, led by Dr. George Ampat

WHAT IS THE FREE FROM PAIN COURSE?

The exercise programme itself adopts exercises from 3 different evidence based training plans and incorporates them into an easy-to-follow, 45 minute online class. The exercises conducted during the class cover all parts of the body and aim to improve strength and reduce pain. The majority of the exercises can be done sat down or holding onto the back of a chair. Participants can join at anytime and from the point of joining, will be invited to participate in 12 weekly sessions

WHO IS THE COURSE AIMED AT?

This programme is designed for the over60s and aims to cater for seniors with musculoskeletal pain as well as for those who wish to try non-surgical options for managing their pain. It is also suitable for people who have already tried surgical treatments and did not get the results they had hoped for. Furthermore, this programme can potentially help those who may not experience great amounts of pain, but who just want to increase their strength and mobility.

WHO RUNS THE COURSE?

The course was created by Dr George Ampat, a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon who specialises in the non-surgical treatment of common musculoskeletal disorders. As a member of the British Lifestyle Society of Medicine, he is well versed in guiding patients as to key lifestyle changes which can vastly improve their quality of life. Dr Ampat combines his vast medical knowledge, with his passion for improving peoples lifestyles and his enthusiasm to engage the public in physical activity tailored to their abilities.

WHAT DOES THE COURSE INCLUDE?

The programme involves an initial consultation with Dr Ampat, access to an exercise booklet, 12 therapeutic patient education leaflets, 12 metaphor leaflets and enrolment into our 12 week exercise programme. These are explained in detail below.

ONLINE CONSULTATION
 
The series will begin with you filling in a questionnaire and a consent form. This will be followed by a private, one-to-one online consultation with Dr. Ampat, using the online teleconferencing platform, “Zoom”. Dr Ampat will take the time to go through your medical history, and will perform a remote examination requiring you to describe any pain you are experiencing as well.
 
ONLINE EXERCISE CLASSES
 
If you choose this option the classes will run once a week for 12 weeks and will be live streamed on the online teleconferencing platform, “Zoom”. These classes will be an opportunity to watch the exercises being performed by trained professionals, and you will be able to join in at home. There will also be opportunities to get feedback on how you are doing each exercise to make sure they are being conducted in the most efficient way. Links to join the online class will be sent via email before the class. There will be a contact number made available to yourselves should you have any technical difficulties.
 
ONLINE TUTORIALS AND Q&A
 
Dr. Ampat will give a 10 minute talk at the beginning of each exercise class, describing the contents of the leaflet as well as explaining the key principles for each week. This is then followed by a 5 minute Q & A session for participants to ask any questions they may have. The class will be interactive and will only have a maximum of 12 participants per class to ensure all participants feel comfortable.
 
EXERCISE BOOKLET
 
At the end of the consultation you will be sent the FREE FROM PAIN™ exercise booklet. This will contain exercises from the Otago exercise programme, motor control exercises for the lower back and Isometric and strengthening exercises for the neck and shoulder. Images and detailed descriptions will be provided for each exercise. You should use this to exercise at home regularly. We suggest that you exercise 3 times per week.
 
PATIENT EDUCATION LEAFLETS
 
If you have chosen to receive this, then 12 therapeutic patient education leaflets will be provided with one made for each week of the programme. These leaflets contain evidence from scientific studies to highlight and describe improvements that you can make to your lifestyle and diet. These leaflets will give you tips on how to sleep better, eat better and exercise better. The main principles are based on the findings from the studies carried out on the Blue zones of the world, where people live the longest and most healthiest lives [Ref 5] .
 
METAPHOR LEAFLETS
 
If you have chosen to receive this, then 12 Metaphor leaflets will be provided with one made for each week of the programme. Dr. Ampat has used metaphors over the years to help patients understand the concepts of disease and to encourage them to begin to take ownership of their pain, allowing them to become much more active in their pain management.
